LICENSING & EXAM INFO

Beyond the Classroom...

Your step-by-step guide to becoming a licensed real estate agent in New Jersey.

Getting your real estate license is an exciting step toward a new careerβ€”but we know the process can feel confusing at first. There are forms to complete, exams to schedule, deadlines to meet, and important decisions to make about your future brokerage.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone.

At Legacy School of Real Estate, we’re here to guide you through every step of the licensing journeyβ€”from your first class to your first day as a licensed agent. Our goal is to make the process simple, clear, and stress-free so you can focus on what matters most: passing your exam and launching your career.

The licensing process can seem overwhelming, but we’re here to help.
Our team provides support on every aspect of the process, from preparing for and passing the State exam to choosing the right brokerage once you’re licensed.

Everything you need to know about licensing requirements:

New Jersey Real Estate Commission Rules

Before you can become a licensed real estate salesperson in New Jersey, you must meet the requirements set by the New Jersey Real Estate Commission (NJREC). These include:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED
  • Complete a 75-hour pre-licensing course at a state-approved real estate school
  • Pass the New Jersey state licensing exam
  • Undergo a fingerprint-based background check
  • Be sponsored by a licensed New Jersey real estate broker
  • Submit your application for licensure within the required timeframe after passing the exam

Understanding these rules is critical, and our team helps ensure you stay on track and meet all state requirements without missing any important steps.

How to Schedule Your Licensing Exam

Once you successfully complete the 75-hour pre-licensing course, you’ll be eligible to sit for the New Jersey real estate licensing exam. Here’s how the process typically works:

  1. Receive your course completion certificate from the school.
  2. Register for the state exam through the official testing provider.
  3. Select a convenient testing location, date, and time.
  4. Pay the required exam fee.
  5. Prepare using our exam prep resources, review materials, and practice questions.

We provide step-by-step instructions, links, and guidance so you know exactly where to click, what to bring, and how to prepare for test day.

Steps to Get Your License After Passing

Passing the state exam is a major milestoneβ€”but you’re not officially licensed until you complete the final steps. After you pass:

  1. Choose a sponsoring brokerage that aligns with your goals and values.
  2. Complete the required fingerprinting and background check (if not already done).
  3. Work with your sponsoring broker to submit your license application to the NJREC.
  4. Pay the required licensing and processing fees.
  5. Once approved, your license will be activated under your sponsoring broker.

Our team can assist you with brokerage placement, paperwork guidance, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks during this final stage.

Continuing Education Requirements

Once you’re licensed, you’ll need to complete continuing education (CE) to keep your license active and in good standing.

In New Jersey:

  • Salespersons must complete continuing education credits every two years before license renewal.
  • Certain credits must be in core topics, such as ethics, fair housing, and legal updates.
  • The remaining credits can be in elective topics like marketing, technology, negotiation, or investment.

Legacy School of Real Estate offers convenient online CE courses designed to keep you compliant, competitive, and confident in your career.

Clear guidance. Real support. A smoother path to your license.
When you choose Legacy School of Real Estate, you’re not just getting a classβ€”you’re getting a team that’s invested in your success from start to finish.
